Is burping appropriate?

Ok, if you're male or live around males you've experienced the loud burp. (I guess that would include everyone reading this?) When I was a little boy, I thought nothing of it. Later in life, as a boy scout leader, I noted that it was a common occurrence with the young'ns that invariably brought laughter, kudos for a "good one" or both. But, ONLY in outdoor settings, never inside. Boys find humor in these naturally occurring, bodily functions and other oddities. A few years ago while at Girls Camp, I was surprised that some young women I was with didn't know how to make themselves burp out loud. One night we happened to be in SLC for dinner. And me being me, things just happened. As we sat outside The Pie Pizzeria, I may have inadvertently taught them how it's done. I may have told them that taking big gulps of their 7/Up and root beer (maybe it was Pepsi and Coke) will cause this phenomenon. They were quick to try this, all on their own. The smiles and laughter are still vivid in my mind. I don't know who was prouder, me or those three young women. They were so cute. So, if your daughter is off to Girl's Camp, teach them ahead of time, they'll have an edge up on the younger, inexperienced ones.... after all, babies, dogs, cats and horses burp. It can make you feel better and we've heard that burping loudly at the dinner table is a sign of appreciation for a good meal in some customs. I would say that burping aloud is allowed at picnics, family get-to-gethers and backyard pool parties. FYI, if you're in SLC see: http://www.thepie.com/

Having three boys, burping is a daily experience. BUT, Cynjyn can really belt one out (not on purpose, they just escape loudly!!) I don't like it from any of my kids!!

The PIE :) Yummm! WoW what a good priesthood leader you are to teach them to burp. Girls Camp brings out the best in us all :)

My husband is among the ranks of those who believe that burps are "signs of appreciation." I don't mind so much when he burps at home, but get quite embarrassed when he burps loudly at other peoples' dinner tables. The funny thing is I'm the one who can burp at will. He's never been able to.

Interesting post.

I was always taught NOT to burp allowed if I could help it, but you are 100% correct about the girls doing it at Girls' Camp...my YW call it "the barking spider"

I think it's perfectly fine. Okay, so maybe not so fine to do in a fancy restaurant, but for girls camp, it's absolutely acceptable. Jason and I used have burping contests all the time!! And not to mention, Shayla would definitely join in. :-)

I remember laying on my bed with my sister Mindy and oldest sister Machelle. Laying across the bed feet resting on the windowsill. She taught us everything that day. From how to annoy as many people as possible by popping your gum loudly, burping on command, and how to burp the ABC's!
You would have thought the boys would have been the teachers, but she taught me well, at to this day I still think I can out burp any guy! Gross but true!
